Sometimes life takes us on roads we never expected to travel. Dreams get delayed, plans change, doors close, relationships end, opportunities seem to disappear, and suddenly we look up and realize we are nowhere near where we thought we would be. But Scripture continually reminds us that a detour does not place us outside the sovereignty of God. Proverbs 19:21 says, “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails.” Our plans may change, but God has not lost control of our story.
Joseph had a dream, but between the dream and the palace came a pit, slavery, false accusations, and prison. Yet in Genesis 50:20, Joseph could eventually say that what others intended for evil, God intended for good. Abraham and Sarah waited so long for their promised son that fulfillment seemed naturally impossible, yet God asked in Genesis 18:14, “Is anything too hard for the LORD?” Moses spent decades in the wilderness before God called him to lead Israel. David was anointed king long before he ever sat on the throne. Ruth experienced devastating loss before God opened a new chapter that ultimately placed her in the lineage of Jesus. And when Lazarus died, Mary and Martha believed Jesus had arrived too late, but John 11 reminds us that what looks final to us is still subject to the authority of God.
Maybe today you are looking at your own life wondering whether too much time has passed. Perhaps you thought you would be further along by now. Maybe divorce, loss, disappointment, financial hardship, caregiving, rejection, or circumstances you never planned have changed the course of your life. But a delay is not necessarily a denial, a detour is not necessarily a cancellation, and a closed door does not mean God has abandoned His purpose for you. Romans 8:28 reminds us that God works in all things for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. Everything that happens to us is not good, but nothing is beyond God’s ability to redeem and use.
Joseph had a pit between his dream and the palace. Moses had a wilderness between his past and his assignment. David had caves between his anointing and his throne. Ruth experienced loss before restoration. Sarah endured years of waiting before holding the promise. Lazarus had a tomb before resurrection. Their journeys remind us that what happens between the promise and the fulfillment matters too. God can use the waiting to develop us, mature us, redirect us, and prepare us for what comes next.
So if life does not look the way you imagined it would, don’t assume the story is over. Philippians 1:6 reminds us that He who began a good work in us will carry it on to completion. You may have taken a detour, but God has not lost track of you. You may have lost time, but God has not lost His sovereignty. You may not be where you thought you would be by now, but God is still writing your story. It can still happen.
