“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” — Proverbs 3:5
One of the hardest parts of walking by faith is living without all the answers. We want to know when things will change, how provision will come, and what tomorrow will hold. Yet there are seasons when God invites us to take the next step while the outcome remains hidden.
Being comfortable with not knowing does not mean we stop caring or asking questions. It means we learn to place what we cannot understand into the hands of the God we trust.
Abraham faced that kind of moment when God instructed him to offer Isaac—the son through whom God had promised to establish his descendants (Genesis 22). Imagine the questions Abraham must have carried up that mountain. How could this instruction fit with the promise? What would happen next?
When Isaac asked where the lamb was, Abraham answered, “God will provide himself a lamb” (Genesis 22:8).
Abraham did not know exactly how God would resolve the situation. But Hebrews 11:17–19 explains that he believed God could even raise Isaac from the dead. His confidence rested in God’s ability to remain faithful to His promise.
God stopped Abraham from harming Isaac and provided a ram for the offering. Abraham discovered provision he could not see when he began the journey.
Then consider Peter.
In Acts 12, Herod had already killed James and imprisoned Peter. Peter had every reason to recognize the danger. He did not know whether he would face the same fate. Yet the night before Herod planned to bring him out, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with chains.
His circumstances were threatening, but he was able to rest.
The church was praying earnestly for him. During the night, an angel awakened Peter, his chains fell off, and he was led out of prison. Peter had been sleeping without knowing that deliverance was approaching.
Abraham climbed a mountain without seeing the provision. Peter slept in a prison without knowing how the night would end. Their stories remind us that we can entrust ourselves to God before we understand what He is doing.
Perhaps you are waiting for an answer concerning your family, finances, health, or future. You have prayed, but you still cannot see the next chapter.
You can make wise plans, seek help, and take the steps available to you. You can also release the demand to have every detail settled before allowing yourself to rest.
Psalm 56:3 says, “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.” Faith makes room for that honest confession: “Lord, I am afraid, and I am choosing to trust You.”
Today, let this be enough: I do not know what comes next, but God is already there.
Prayer
Father, help me trust You with the answers I do not have. When uncertainty makes me anxious, steady my heart with Your Word. Give me wisdom for today, courage to obey, and peace to rest while I wait. Like Abraham, help me trust Your faithfulness. Like Peter, help me rest even when circumstances feel threatening. I place my future in Your hands. In Jesus’ name, amen.
