Fasting: Making Room for God’s Mighty Hand

“There, by the Ahava Canal, I proclaimed a fast, so that we might humble ourselves before our God and ask Him for a safe journey for us and our children, with all our possessions… So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and He answered our prayer.” — Ezra 8:21, 23

Before Ezra led God’s people on a dangerous journey back to Jerusalem, he made an unexpected decision. He didn’t ask the king for an army. He didn’t request more horses or stronger weapons. Instead, he called the people to fast and pray.

Why?

Because Ezra had already declared that “the gracious hand of our God is on everyone who looks to Him” (Ezra 8:22). He wanted his actions to match his faith. He believed that God’s protection was greater than human security.

Fasting is more than skipping meals. It is choosing dependence over self-sufficiency. It is humbling ourselves before God and saying, “Lord, I need You more than I need my own strength, my own plans, or my own understanding.”

Imagine preparing for a long road trip. You wouldn’t leave without checking your fuel, your tires, and your GPS. Yet many of us travel through life’s greatest challenges without first seeking God’s direction. Fasting is like pulling into the only service station that can completely prepare you for the journey ahead. It fills your spirit with faith, aligns your heart with God’s will, and reminds you that He is your ultimate source.

Fasting is also like pruning a fruit tree. A gardener removes healthy-looking branches, not to harm the tree, but to help it produce even greater fruit. In the same way, fasting removes distractions so our spiritual lives can flourish. We temporarily surrender something our flesh desires to make more room for what our spirit desperately needs.

Jesus taught the importance of fasting in Matthew 6:16–18, reminding us that it is an act of devotion, not a performance. In Joel 2:12, the Lord calls His people, “Return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.” And James 4:10 promises, “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up.”

Ezra and the people didn’t fast because they were afraid—they fasted because they trusted God. Their confidence wasn’t in an earthly king but in the King of Kings. And Scripture records a beautiful outcome: “He answered our prayer.”

Whatever journey lies before you—a new career, a difficult diagnosis, a family crisis, or a step of faith—don’t overlook the power of fasting. Before asking everyone else for help, seek the One whose hand is able to guide, protect, and provide.

When we humble ourselves before God, we discover that His hand is always stronger than the obstacles before us.
